I recently started looking into meal delivery services after sustaining a foot injury and becoming temporarily immobile.
Going grocery shopping was out of the question, but I still wanted to eat healthy for my recovery.
Plus I was starting to get bored being stuck at home and not able to try out different restaurants and cuisines.
This is how I came to learn about Sun Basket meal kit delivery service.
I’ve been using Sun Basket for over 2 months and have ordered a variety of Sun Basket menu meals. I’m sharing all the deets, tips, and answering all your questions below!
What is Sun Basket?
Sun Basket is a meal delivery service that delivers fresh, organic produce and clean ingredients from the best farms directly to your door.
They strive to source organic produce 100% of the time and select the best antibiotic and hormone-free meat and organic eggs.

Another great way to select your meals is by the amount of time it takes to prepare and cook the meal:
- Oven-ready meals: takes only 6 minutes by microwave or 35-40 minutes in the oven. Don’t feel like cooking? This is the option for you!
- Pre-chopped meals: takes only 15 minutes to prepare, cook, and put on the table.
- Classic meals: may take 20 minutes or up to 45 minutes to get food on the table.
TEAMWORK: a rather unexpected “side-effect” of cooking meal delivery kit is that my husband and I now work closely together to tackle the prep and cooking. We enjoy broadening our culinary skills learning new ways and using new ingredients to cook.
I love that he is trying out more vegetable dishes and eating healthier.
That said, I’m still working on getting my 5-year-old twins to eat the same food that we eat though… they seem to be getting pickier as they get older!
For now, we only order enough servings for 2 people.
GENEROUS PORTIONS: speaking of ordering for two, we find that most meals are plentiful and last us more than one meal. I love having leftovers as they reduce the workload for the next meal!
What I Didn’t Love
PACKAGING: While Sun Basket prides itself on sustainability and all the major components of its box are compostable and recyclable, the packaging is heavy and bulky.
I was also disappointed at the number of plastic materials to dispose of, from the ice packs to the insulation materials used during the hotter months (recycled paper is used for cooler months).
But since we are working with farm-fresh ingredients here, making sure that they are kept cool and safe to eat with the box potentially sitting out is absolutely necessary.
EXTRA COST: Most produce and other ingredients included in the meal kits are organic, but organic proteins (meat, seafood…) cost extra.
Given that Sun Basket’s price is slightly above other meal kit delivery services, I was expecting all organic ingredients at the base price.
Nevertheless, Sun Basket still distinguishes themselves by having more organic option than other meal kit delivery services.
How Much Does Sun Basket Cost a Week?
Sun Basket isn’t cheap. But meal kit delivery services are in the business of delivering quality farm-fresh food directly to you for convenience sake, with time saved from the neatly laid out ingredients for fast cooking and even oven-ready meals.
You are paying for gourmet restaurant culinary experiences in the convenience of your home, at a lower cost compared to dining out at restaurants.
This convenience is precious for those of us that may find it difficult to go out to restaurants with young children, or sheltering-at-home in the middle of a pandemic!
You also get peace of mind knowing the exact ingredients that go into your dishes and expand your culinary education and skills by cooking new dishes at the same time.
Here is a breakdown of the Sun Basket menu pricing by the week:
If you order 2 dinners per week for two, your cost is $59.95 including shipping, which works out to about $15 per person or serving (and if you end up with leftovers like I often do, it costs even less!).
Managing or Canceling Subscriptions
Making changes and canceling your subscription is super easy and just clicks away.
Not only can you specify your delivery frequency, but you can also pause your subscription if you go away on vacation or for any reason.
Can You Gift Sun Basket?
You can give the gift of Sun Basket to your loved ones by specifying the dollar amount.
There are two options available to choose whether you want to email or print a PDF of the gift.
So is Sun Basket Worth it?
Personally, I think Sun Basket is totally worth the money. Having farm-to-table healthy gourmet meals at home feels like a privilege, especially if you have limited time or access to a farmer’s market.
The convenience, quality ingredients, culinary adventures, and amazing taste – what’s not to love?
